Igreja dos Carmelitas
Monument & Heritage
The Igreja dos Carmelitas ou Igreja dos Carmelitas Descalços dates from the 17th century, when Dom Filipe II of Portugal awarded the construction of the convent of the Barefoot Carmelites in the former Olival field.
The religious building has architectural styles common to its age, such as Manneirism and Baroque, being there for a little more austere than its “sister” Igreja do Carmo.
Part of the building complex is the old monastery that still exists to the west of the church, and the whole block was owned by the order, where until quite recently existed the hospital of the order of Carmel. After the end of the liberal wars the convent was extinguished by the crown, being now occupied by the Guarda Nacional Republicana (The National Guard).
In May 2013 it was classified National Monument.
